from my perspective (i'm doing a good chunk of hiring of students and recent grads), that seems like a normal response and they're not trying to put you off.

just keeping you posted on the progress of the hiring and giving you a better idea of when you'll hear. until the actual decisions are made, most correspondences seem dry and give some (but not much) information.
