My co-intern, who is a rising senior CS major, doesn't know a single DOS command. This would be forgivable if it weren't for the fact that he doens't know a single UNIX command either. Apparently he's been using Windows for all his computing needs. And this would also be forgivable if he knew windows inside and out. But he doesn't even know the word "Registry." He doesn't know how to back things up to a disk. He's making me sick. And he's getting paid more than me why? Because he's a CS major.
Bullshit I say! Why'd he need me to explain the concept of a "for loop" to him yesterday? Why does he not know what a BIOS is? And why does he pay twice as much for brand name computers with shitty components? Because he's clueless. *sigh*
He decided that he needed a laptop last week, because the 'CS major' DOESN'T OWN A COMPUTER AND HASN'T FOR A YEAR! So he asks me my opinion. I pop on pricewatch and quote him $1253 for a P3 1GHZ lappie with win2k. What's he do? Decides that since it's a brand he doesn't know (it's a small company who make their own) he's going to go to HP and buy one from them. He pays $2400 for a Celeron 850 and a shitty 4MB vid card instead. It came with WinME. 'Nuf said.
Maybe he just has too much money in his life.
Maybe I shouldn't be so critical.
Am I too harsh?

Date: 2001-06-14 02:26 pm (UTC)HOW LONG has he been in college, anyway?
He can't have had a single programming class if he doesn't even know what a damn for loop is....

Date: 2001-06-14 03:15 pm (UTC)To be honest, he knew what a for loop was, but he couldn't understand the difference between the counter variables in the loop (i&j) and the variables outside of the parentheses. It just boggled his mind that they had no impact on eachother.
*sigh*
For his senior project he's doing a robot that me and a friend of mine coded in about 2 hours for an AI class we were taking.
He and 4 other computer engineering majors are doing almost exactly the same robot that we made, for their freakin senior project/thesis!
Painful to think that he has better job prospects than me. Guess I'm really just jealous.

Date: 2001-06-15 06:19 am (UTC)I failed that class and quit being a CS major because it was a total waste of the money being paid for me to go to school there.

Date: 2001-06-14 06:29 pm (UTC)i detest the fact that in this society your name and your label are more important than what you know and feel. and this is a perfect example of that.
my mother's fiance is an ibm specialist. they fly him out to japan because he is so knowledgeable in his field that he is irreplaceable. he never went to college, he just learned about computers and got by on his knowledge.
admirable. and nearly impossible.

Date: 2001-06-15 06:16 am (UTC)I totally agree, but I can see the other side of the coin too.
I mean if you're applying for a job they have to base their accepting someone on whatever credentials that they can provide. It's just not feasible to try to get to know each candidate individually. However I do believe that they should put more weight on the references than the degrees. Any chump can get a degree in something. It doesn't mean they understand it.
*tips his hat to you*
