I came home and the intarwub was b0rked.
NOOOOOOOOO!

Finally discovered that the cable modem was flaking out. Seemed to be getting power, but not steadily or sufficiently. I happened to have a spare power brick that puts out nearly the same amperage, and at the right voltage and polarity, so I plugged it in and YAY! Cable modem's not dead, just the cheapass power brick that came with it!
Running on reserve fuel cells for now, need to hit radio shack and get a replacement tomorrow.

FWIW, in this weather, I'd have wondered whether the modem (or the power supply) were overheating. I've had cheap consumer electronics temporarily fail for that reason before; often it's enough simply to ensure adequate ventilation. (In particular, book-form-factor units seem to radiate heat much better on end than laying down.)

That was my first thought as well, I unplugged it for 20 minutes and it was worse at the end of the time than it was at the beginning. I moved on to either broken modem, or dead PSU, and luckily it was the latter. ^_^
