my ideal tech/home/life/... stuff setup. someday.
I'm just making this post so that I'll have it to reference in the future when I try to remember what I was lusting after.
House:
Power/heat:
Solar roof, reverse flow with grid for optimal cost/eco solution.
(New geothermal stuff on the horizon, keep an eye on it. Stock tickers: colcf.pk / boref.pk)
good insulation (research needed)
inline water-heater
Critters.
House Design
light light light
hand made furniture, custom (hand made?) lighting
adaptable and well-designed kitchen-social space as well as practical
as much done with sustainable materials as possible
non-traditional heating sources? hot water pipes under the floors...
Workshop/officey space for both of us - - woodworking, etc. for you, craftier for me
Wrestling/punching bag/yoga space with mats, etc.
Entertainment:
Projector (infocus X1) (portable?)
Combo File Server/DVD/DIVX computer (mini-itx solution)
Speakers in every room, independant volume controls.
game system(s)
MAME cabinet
pinball machine? mmm... tasty.
Computers:
Windows Gaming boxen (hooked to projector? otherwise gaming LCD)
Linux Boxen (low power for general use, big slow LCD)
**wall mount over desk?**
gadgets:
camera. Liking the Pentax Optio 555. 5MP, 5x optical zoom. steve's review is positive.

assuming I'm in this master plan...
Date: 2003-12-03 08:40 am (UTC)furniture and lighting designed and built by us
garden space/green house/ house plants (food types esp)
speakers wired all over house for music, etc.
projector system ought to be portable and able to adapt to new/old media
menagerie of animals (cats, ferrets, hedgehog, fish, bearded dragon?)
adaptable and well-designed kitchen-social space as well as practical
as much done with sustainable materials, etc.
I'd like to be off the electric grid, so we've gotta find ways to supplement solar panels for electric most likely - unless the house has amazing amounts of sun. Hook up exercise machinery like dorks? capture compost gas? *laugh*
Would love to look into non-traditional heating sources too, running solely off elec is trop cher, don't wanna be on the gas grid, but if water's heated inline (which rocks), can't do hot water pipes under the floors... hmm.

(probably more to come)

Date: 2003-12-03 08:55 am (UTC)all the rest, yes. This started out as a tech stuff post, I was trying to keep it to that. ;o)
my parents just have a big gas tank behind the house for their hot water. Gets filled about 2-4 times a year. they're off the grid for gas. ;o) but if we're right there, there's no reason to be off the grid gas-wise.
Hot water pipes under the floor could be done with a separate system. In the city, geothermal's not really an option i guess. but there are other ways to heat water. solar for instance. run a lot of small tubes over the roof and let the sun heat the water.
