it has come to my attention that there are people in this world who have never read Neuromancer (William Gibson) before.
This is unacceptable, and I will make it my personal crusade to hunt down these people wherever they may be.
and maybe foist some more books upon them as the opportunity presents itself if they don't react badly to the initial dose of old skool cyberpunk.

I have never read this book.

However, I have control of all the SlapBracelets.

Submit!

I have not read it BUT it is on my List of Things to Read Soon, honest! I did read Ringworld, does that count?

I found it hard to really enjoy Neuromancer since I'd already read the better-in-every-way Snow Crash.

Snow Crash rules. I have Cryptonomicon, another of his, which I need to read.

You both need to read Quicksilver, then. Its his newest book, the fist book in a trilogy called "The Baroque Cycle."

Its 18th c. Cyberpunk. There's no better way to describe it. Simply brilliant. Of course I'm only about 150 pages into it, after having owned it since it came out three weeks ago but that's not my fault or the book's!

Yes, I do need to get it, but I hate buying hardbacks. They're just so freaking expensive and inconvenient.

I've got all of his others books, and enjoy all of them. his writing style is approximately the greatest ever. :-)

I find it really hard to enjoy my copy of Neuromancer since it smells like B vitamins (which is foul).

But no, I agree. Snow Crash > Neuromancer, but Neuromancer also required for fundamental cyberpunk reading. Past that, I think Gibson got suckier quicker, but Stephenson has a line of politics in his books that I hate, hate, hate.

Stephenson? Political?

Naaaaaaah.

In his more recent books (I don't have Quicksilver, and I doubt it would, so leaving that one out) he has had characters that have political/national affiliations that I *really* don't agree with. I don't want to get into it because it's a loaded word, but he is putting some very strangely conservative moral elements as key players (not protagonists, but second-to-the protagonist in a few cases) in his works.

Vague, I know, but it drove me nuts during Crypto.

It's also worth noting that he usually represents many different political/social groups in his books... and then takes them to the biggest extreme that he can. Almost like reading an allegory or somesuch. The Big U comes out on top of the list for this one, and Cryptonomicon not all that far behind. Then, of course, you've got to take into account that liberals are all crazy. O:-)

Oh, and that my comment you replied to was deeply rooted in sarcasm.

Snowcrash isn't a bad follow-up treatment either, presuming they survive the initial shock.
