off the grid is tricky. there's far better ways to do it, we can discuss in person. ;o) all the rest, yes. This started out as a tech stuff post, I was trying to keep it to that. ;o)
my parents just have a big gas tank behind the house for their hot water. Gets filled about 2-4 times a year. they're off the grid for gas. ;o) but if we're right there, there's no reason to be off the grid gas-wise. Hot water pipes under the floor could be done with a separate system. In the city, geothermal's not really an option i guess. but there are other ways to heat water. solar for instance. run a lot of small tubes over the roof and let the sun heat the water.
