Who's the guy who just managed to run an SNMP sweep of the office network while trying to add a printer to an OSX 10.5 iMac?

Ok, so I'm goofing off with the new iMac on my desk but seriously, WTF is this crap? Why are you SNMP sweeping to find printers OSX?
It sets of lots of alarms on our network and pages my coworker... *grumble*

It's common for an OS to scan a network for available printers. Network aware printers tend to use SNMP to report status (out of paper, jammed, etc.). I suspect there was a 1-2 punch of "Hey are you out there?..." followed by an "...and how are you feeling today?"

I can kind of understand, but in a corporate environment with 30 macs that kind of behavior just isn't gonna fly.

basically pinging every IP address in a subnet saying "Hi, are you what I wanna talk to? if not then what are you? Gimme some infos..."

It's not something a client should be doing, and used to be the first thing a hacker would do on gaining access to a network, so it kind of sets off some alarm triggers.

Of course these days you'd have to be an idiot to do that has a hacker, but hey. We still watch for it.
