mmmm...
after some hassle with fedex, I finally got new speakers for my 'puter to replace my dead ones.
I'd been using headphones all the time since my speakers stopped turning on.
Did my research, and picked up some Logitech X-230's.
They're pretty sweet sounding, I'm happy with my purchase.
My only quibble with them, is that the volume of the headphone jack isn't controlled by the speaker volume knob.
Minor issue really, but I'd be remiss if I didn't bring up something negative. For the price they were, and the quality of the sound, I'm definitely willing to overlook that.
If anyone's in the market for 'puter speakers, hunt these suckers down.
Cheapest price I found was newegg.com.

Which is a pain for me, cause my desk's always a mess so they go wherever they fit. My old Altec's were far more flexible in placement.
