mmmm...
after some hassle with fedex, I finally got new speakers for my 'puter to replace my dead ones.
I'd been using headphones all the time since my speakers stopped turning on.
Did my research, and picked up some Logitech X-230's.
They're pretty sweet sounding, I'm happy with my purchase.

My only quibble with them, is that the volume of the headphone jack isn't controlled by the speaker volume knob.
Minor issue really, but I'd be remiss if I didn't bring up something negative. For the price they were, and the quality of the sound, I'm definitely willing to overlook that.

If anyone's in the market for 'puter speakers, hunt these suckers down.

when my old speakers died and I learned that monsoon was no longer operating (which is a shame, because those speakers were awesome), I picked up the X-230 set. They're great. I only wish the satellite speakers plugged into RCA jacks, so I could use my old satellites. These have a more limited sweet spot.

yeah, I noticed that the placement on these guys is REALLY sensitive.
Which is a pain for me, cause my desk's always a mess so they go wherever they fit. My old Altec's were far more flexible in placement.

I have a small desk and have to use shelves that are nearby. The one on my left was too high, but fortunately there was a convenient screw that I could use to hang it.

I'm enjoying my Klipsch Promedias.

At the time, they were the best to get, all the reviews said...they still sound awesome, the disadvantage is that I have NO headphone jack.

The newer models have rectified this sad situation, though.

You can get a little bit of headphone cable at Radio Shack for about $2 that has a volume knob on it; that might fix your volume issue.

yeah, I'm gonna see how much I actually use the headphones, and perhaps pick up something like that.

Thanks for the advice. I've been in the market for compy upgrades piece by piece and my 5-year old comp-usa speaker/sub combo was due up on the block next. So thatnks! :)

Question tho, what player(s) do you use and what do you have the EQ at (roughly)? I'm playing through winamp and occasionally Media Player, but still think I could be sounding better.

Totally depends on your setup: audio card and speakers.
Personally I use winamp 99.9% of the time. My eq with my old speakers was best with the bass and treble rolled down a little bit, and a slight dip just to the right of center.

With these new speakers, I have the bass rolled waaaay down (and the volume on the sub turned all the way down) and it's still pretty damned bassy. My neighbor downstairs probably hates me. ^_^
The rest of the eq is a fairly flat curve, rolled down a bit at the treble again.

Again, that's going to depend on your physical location in comparison to the speakers, the speakers, your sound card, the acoustics of the room, hardwood/carpet floors, etc., etc. It's also slightly subjective: my prefered sound differs from Meg's prefered sound, etc.

Usually though, eq is a flatened curve, up in the middle, down at the ends, or sometimes a flattened "m" shape. If you've got speakers that roll off the bass, you obviously account for that, etc.

It's just one of those things you have to play with until you get it sounding just right for you and your setup.
