Dear Diary,
It has been 24 days since my last confession...
Errr, wait. Wrong context.

It occurs to me that refreshing my friends page obsessively and posting once a month may be a little odd. Almost like I'm not really a part of this here LJ community, but more of a lurker. Just a random thought.

Today I had a new sensory experience! Did you know that your breath can condense in a mustache (if you have one) and freeze? it's very odd, your upper-lip starts feeling a little stiff, so you wiggle it and it crackles for a second. It only seems to happen below about 12F for me, I'm hoping that one of these days it'll get way colder and I can try to actually snap bits off.

Oh, did I mention I'm conducting an experiment on my face? Yeah, I have a mustache and small beard at the moment. [EDIT: see here!] The jury is out, but most people who have expressed an opinion say that the beard bit is good but the mustache ain't so hot. Unfortunately the beard without the mustache would be an Amish chin-strap, and I don't think that would look good on me, so I'm trying to figure out where to go with it from here. I don't think it will be a long-term addition to my face, but I certainly need to keep it long enough to have a few pictures taken of me so that I can look back when I'm old and say "Hey, I remember having a beard for a few months, that was funny!"

Big gig tonight for ENSMB, we're doing a little circus at the Arisia Sci-Fi convention in Cambridge. You'd have to buy into the con to see the show, which is somewhere in the $15-20 range. But if you're going to go to the con anyway, come to the ballroom tonight between 7 and 11pm and check out the fun!

aaaand back to work.

A long time ago when I was a grad student in NH, I too experienced that mustache-freezing trick. I thought it was way-cool! Made me feel like Sir Edmund Hillary or one of those other cool guys in National Geographic...

I think the mustache looks good!

Not having seen your grand beard experiment, I will at least give you the benefit of my own first beard-growing experiment: it took a long damn time, the first time, for the whole thing to work. But eventually it did, and even now when starting from scratch, it comes together much more quickly. So patience is rewarded, if you care to have patience... unless you're one of those people who will never be able to grow facial hair, which that patience will also tell you. :)

Addendum: yesterday, I was standing out at my bus stop for fifteen minutes. I reached up to scratch my chin and though I must have gotten toothpaste in my beard or something... but no, it was just several big chunks of ice. :S

Addendum 2: Good luck with the show tonight!

Clearly, you need a new "Beard Experiment 2009" userpic. ;)

I'm reasonably sure you could find *someone* to point a camera in your direction. Several someones, most likely. :)

beard log! - the real blog! it's looking like a good start. as pointed out above, patience is key because the first time is always the toughest. especially getting through the itchy phase where you can't really think about anything except getting the woolly muskrat off your face.

first time for me it took about 3 months for me to grow enough facial hair for me to call it a beard (and another couple before other people would refer to it a such), but it does seem to speed up every time. Everyone's different of course, but I shave mine off every once in awhile and can now go from clean shaven to completely scraggly in about a week, and after a couple of weeks it's pretty darn full.

Did you know that your breath can condense in a mustache (if you have one) and freeze?

yeah... i did know that.

washing my hair and then going out in the cold and having my ponytail freeze solid gives me more worries about "hair snapping off." but ice in my mustache always seems more startling to me, because i'm used to thinking of my face as... closer in, or something-- like, if i'm not frozen, how can part of my face be?
